Zabal, Fernando. Fernando Zabal was created by the Spanish creators Jose Canellas Casals (Amiel, Armando, Jaime Bazán, Black (III), Carlos and Marcos Bon, Bronkos, Cesar, Judit, Thalma Klan, Mario, Nick, Red Circle, Rin-Tin-Tin (I), Sam, Sankro, Spaceman (II), Titán (II), Toby, Capitán Velez, Mack Wan, Zimbra, Khun Zivan) and Serra Massana and appeared in the comic strip “Bajo Tierra con los Monstruos de la Destruccion” (Pelayos, 1939).
Zabal is a young man serving the Spanish fascist forces who is recruited to put an end to the “monsters of destruction,” the Republican fighters whose response to the loss of the Civil War was to build enormous underground galleries across the Iberian peninsula, fill them with dynamite, and attempt to destroy the entire peninsula. Assisting Zabal in his struggle against the Republicans is “P & F-l,” a Fantômas-like warrior clad in a black bulletproof suit. Together, they re-fight the Spanish Civil War underground, encountering SCIENCE! devices, disembodied talking heads seated on thrones of bones guarded by Chinese warriors, Republican soldiers wearing rubber suits and gas masks, giant caimans, and zombies. Eventually, Zabal and P & F-l triumph.
