Ryan, John. John Ryan was created by “John Ryan,” the pseudonym of Roger Torrey (Bryant, Johnny Carr, Johnny Cass, Shean Connell, Sam Drake, Mickey Hanigan, George Killeen, Pat McCarthy, Mike O’Dell, Dal Prentice), and appeared in twenty stories in Private Detective Stories from 1941 to 1946, beginning with “Murder With A Song” (Private Detective Stories, May 1941).
John Ryan is a hard-drinking Irish-American private detective, droll, cynical, and quick with his .45. He is occasionally hired by society types on the grounds that he can pass for a gentleman in a dinner coat.
