McCarthy, Pat. Pat McCarthy was created by Roger Torrey (Bryant, Johnny Carr, Johnny Cass, Shean Connell, Sam Drake, Mickey Hanigan, George KilleenMike O’Dell, Dal Prentice, John Ryan) and appeared in fourteen stories in Black Mask from 1936 to 1940, beginning with “Jail Bait” (Black Mask, Oct. 1936).

Pat McCarthy is a private detective. He used to work for the N.Y.P.D. and used to work for a national detective agency in both Chicago and St. Louis. But McCarthy dislikes the police–he left after four years with the police because one of his arrests was claimed by his Sergeant--and dislikes working for anyone else, so now he is on his own, although he is assisted by his “sidekick” Marge Chalmers. McCarthy knows the law and stands on his rights when he is confronted by the police. He is combative and has a black beard and a “long, sad Irish face.” His “thin, wide shoulders, his thin, long face, looked like an ascetic Irish priest; his eyes alone belying that impression. Sharp and very knowing, they were the very reverse of saint-like.”
