McGrail, Captain. Captain McGrail was created by Richard B. Sale (Cobra (I), Daffy Dill, Candid Jones, Penny Packer, Calamity Quade, Daniel Webster) and appeared in three stories in Detective Fiction Weekly from 1939 to 1941, beginning with “He Floats Through the Air” (Detective Fiction Weekly, Sept. 30, 1939).
Captain McGrail is a Bellem. He is an aging, hard-boiled policeman in New York City, hardened but with a wearily cynical humorous edge, and surprisingly well-educated for his position. He is often pestered for information by a writer for the Chronicle, who is a kind of sidekick that McGrail neither likes nor wants.
