Westhanger, Kate. Kate Westhanger was created by Edgar Wallace (Viola Beech, Brigand, Wireless Bryce, Felix Carfew, Dixon, Elegant Edward, Inspector Elk, Educated Evans, Four Square Jane, Dixon Hawke, Heine, Felix Jenks, Just Men, King Kong (I), Larry Loman, Superintendent Minter, Policy Sleuth, Oliver Rater, John G. Reeder, The Ringer, Sanders, York Symon, Tam o’the Scoots, Inspector Wade) and appeared in nineteen stories which were collected in Kate Plus Ten (1919).
Kate Westhanger is child of dual heritages. On her mother’s side was the brilliant General Sir Shaun Masserfield. On her father’s side is her uncle, a thorough-going scoundrel who completed Kate’s education after her father died. Kate inherits her maternal grandfather’s knack for strategy and her uncle’s desire for the accumulation of booty without regard to laws. She is raised by her uncle to be a thief, and she becomes “the brains of the biggest criminal organization in the world…Kate is the mother of Crime Street.” She is responsible for numerous successful and very profitable heists. She is pert, capable, and has a clever organization under her. Nonetheless, she finally relents and marries her Loving Enemy, the policeman who has been pursuing her.
