Merrick, Stuart. Stuart Merrick was created by Edmond Hamilton (Captain Future, Rab Crane, Brian Cullan, Ethan Drew, Interstellar Patrol, Jan Tor, Dr. Whitney) and appeared in three stories in Magic Carpet Magazine and Weird Tales from 1933 to 1935, beginning with “Kaldar, World of Antares” (Magic Carpet Magazine, Apr. 1933).

Stuart Merrick is a brawler and adventurer, and in the future those are not necessarily positive attributes. But one day the “nine greatest astronomers and astro-physicists now living” summon Merrick. They need help, and he’s the right man for the job. (In Merrick’s own words, his qualifications are an “adventurous disposition, education, lack of family connections, indigence”). The nine send Merrick to “a world of the great red star Antares” by breaking him down to electrons and beaming him to Antares. There he finds the world of Kaldar, whose inhabitants believe he is “Chan of Corla—the supreme ruler of this land!” But Corla is under attack by the Cosp spider-men, and Merrick is forced to fight against them for Kaldar and the toothsome Narna.
