Casey, Flashgun. Flashgun Casey was created by George Harmon Coxe (Paul Baron, Jack Fenner, Max Hale, Sgt. Jansen, Kent Murdock, Paul Standish, Tom Wade) and appeared in twenty-one stories in Black Mask and six novels and short story collections from 1934 to 1964, beginning with “Return Engagement” (Black Mask, Mar. 1934). Casey went on to appear in two films, one radio show, a comic book series, and a television series.
Jack "Flashgun" Casey is a veteran of World War One who served with the American Expeditionary Force. After the war he became a photographer for the Boston Globe, but a fight with his bosses led him to be hired by the rival Express. While working for the Express Casey finds that his photographs often lead him into trouble, usually involving murder investigations. He solves them while also scooping his rivals. Casey is tall and brawny, with a quick temper. He is assisted by Tom Wade. Casey’s police contacts are Lieutenant Logan and Sergeant Manahan. Casey also spends time with Ann Williams, his reporter girlfriend, and chats with the bartender Ethelbert in his favorite bar, the Blue Note. During World War Two Casey, who is ineligible for active duty because of his age and a bad knee (injured by a bootlegger's bullet), solves murders on the homefront and teaches a class in "defense photography."
