Baron. The Baron was created by "Anthony Morton," the pseudonym of John Creasey (Sexton Blake, Patrick Dawlish, Department Z, Dixon Hawke, The Liberator, Bruce Murdoch, Doctor Palfrey, The Toff, Roger West), and appeared in forty-seven novels from 1937 to 1979, beginning with Meet the Baron.
The Baron is John Mannering, a handsome, well-to-do socialite and citizen who in his youth was a playboy by day and jewel thief by night. However, when he met the beautiful young artist Lorna Fauntley he instantly fell in love and decided to reform his ways. He did, and married her. He then became an antique dealer, working for the very respectable Quinns of Mayfair, and began using his skills as a cracksman for good. He is an independent vigilante but is happy to help the police, in the form of Superintendent Bristow of Scotland Yard, when they ask for his help, although Bristow still suspects the Baron of wrongdoing. The Baron is uncaring about class barriers and shows no compunctions about breaking the law and bears no regrets about his years as a thief.
