Department Z. The Department was created by John Creasey (The Baron, Sexton Blake, Patrick Dawlish, Dixon Hawke, The LiberatorBruce Murdoch, Doctor Palfrey, The Toff, Roger West), and appeared in twenty-nine novels from 1932 to 1957, beginning with The Death Miser.

Department Z is the counterespionage arm of British Intelligence. It is commanded by Gordon Craigie, a square-jawed Scotsman, and consists of a variety of unusual agents. After World War Two ends the Department Z stories increasingly venture into science fictional territory, describing Mad Scientists who try to take over the world as well as Communist spies.
