Department Z. The Department was created by John Creasey (The Baron, Sexton Blake, Patrick Dawlish, Dixon Hawke, The Liberator, Bruce Murdoch, Doctor Palfrey, The Toff, Roger West), and appeared in twenty-nine novels from 1932 to 1957, beginning with The Death Miser. Department Z is the counterespionage arm of British Intelligence. It is commanded by Gordon Craigie, a square-jawed Scotsman, and consists of a variety of unusual agents. After World War Two ends the Department Z stories increasingly venture into science fictional territory, describing Mad Scientists who try to take over the world as well as Communist spies.
