Balaoo. Balaoo was created by Gaston Leroux (Cheri-Bibi, Eliphas de Saint-Elme de Taillebourg de la Nox, Captain Hyx, Theophraste Longuet, Benedict Masson, Mysterious King, Phantom of the Opera, Joseph Rouletabille) and appeared in the story serial “Balaoo” (Le Matin, Oct. 9-Dec. 18, 1912; as a novel, 1912). Balaoo was made into a film serial in 1913.

Balaoo is a missing link who is transformed, by Professor Saint-Aubin, into a half-human, half-animal creature. Balaoo escapes from Saint-Aubin. A friend of Balaoo’s, an ape named Gabriel, begins kidnapping women, for which Balaoo is blamed. Eventually Gabriel is lured into a trap and is killed. Balaoo and Professor Saint-Aubin flee to Java.
