Inch, John. John Inch was created by “Jesse Templeton,” the pseudonym of George Goodchild (Captain Crash, Dixon Hawke, Operator 19, Q33, Nigel Rix), and appeared in twenty-one stories which were collected in Inch of the C.I.D. (1932).

John Inch is an Inspector for Scotland Yard. He is long and lean, who usually looks “as expressionless as a piece of carved wood.” He has “a mind well stored with knowledge, gained through fifteen years of adventure in the underworld of crime, and increased by omnivorous reading in the few hours of leisure afforded him.” He is heavily scarred, and although he deals with a variety of brutal crimes “there was within him an abundant store of sympathy, and more than one poor misguided devil had gone to serve his sentence after voting Inch to be ‘white.’” He is assisted by Detective Rawlings.
