Dick. Dick was created by H.C. Bailey (Raoul Bomfortune, Bran, Joshua Clunk, Reginald Fortune) and appeared in the story serial “The Sea Captain” (The Grand Magazine, 1912); the serial was published as The Sea Captain (1913).
In the Elizabethan era Dick (“he had no name but Dick, like his father the swineherd before him”) rises from a humble Berkshire origin to become a ship’s captain, cherished by the Queen and loved by Mary Rymingtowne, daughter of a wealthy nobleman. Along the way Dick survives battles at sea with the Spanish, being captured by the Moors, and raids and battles across the Caribbean.
