Brent, Derrick. Derrick Brent was created by “Victor Nelson,” the pseudonym of John William Bobin (Don Darrel, Valerie Drew, Lila Lisle, Sylvia Silence, Top-Gear Tempest), and appeared in thirteen stories in The Boys’ Friend in 1916 and 1917, beginning with “The Secret of the Sarcophagus” (The Boys’ Friend, Sep. 9, 1916). Derrick Brent is a Great Detective modeled on Nelson Lee. Brent is “the Schoolmaster Detective,” and his cases take him around the world and involve confrontations with German spies, master counterfeiters, Yellow Perils in San Francisco’s Chinatown and Japan, and possible ghosts. Brent is assisted by schoolboys Tom and Teddy.
