Rye, Bill. Bill Rye was created by “John Spain,” the pseudonym of Cleve F. Adams (Canavan & Kleinschmidt, Engelhardt & Dewey, Rex McBride, Steve McCloud, Violet McDade, John J. Shannon) and appeared in Dig Me a Grave (1942) and Death is Like That (1943).
Bill Rye is a cynical, hard-boiled operative for Callahan, a wealthy oilman and political power in California. Rye is constantly called upon to clean up his boss’s messes, and does so, whether through bribery, perjury, or violence.
