O’Mara, Shaun. Shaun O’Mara was created by Peter Cheyney (Lemmy Caution, Michael Kells, Alonzo MacTavish, Everard Peter Quayle) and appeared in Dark Street (1944), Dark Interlude (1947) and Dark Bahama (1950).

Shaun Aloysius O’Mara is the “star employee” of Everard Peter Quayle and assists him on espionage cases. O’Mara is a kind of fixer for Quayle. O’Mara has “a flair for picking up the pieces; for dealing with the job that had gone wrong; for stepping in on a business at the last moment and putting everything in its proper place.” O’Mara is “tall and very big. He reminded one of a bull, except that, when you looked at his face, you were conquered immediately by a deep and peculiar charm which can live only in a certain type of Irishman.” He “believed that the world was a very good place. Quite obviously, at any moment of the night or day, he was satisfied with it. He was prepared to be pleased with life in practically any circumstances, and it is necessary to add that he was quite often as pleased with death.” O’Mara

had a quick, cool, mathematical–albeit whimsical–brain and was extremely apt with a hand gun. Mr. O’Mara would charm you, would eat and drink with you, would converse with you, play cards with you, win your money off you, swear unfailing loyalty to you; and kill you; all with the same complete and dispassionate pleasure–a pleasure which was derived from the fact that Mr. O’Mara believed that anything that he did was for the good of the world in general and himself in particular.
