Mercado, Mariano. Mariano Mercado was created by D.L. Champion (Inspector Allhoff, Mister Death (I), Phantom Detective, Rex Sackler) and appeared in nine stories in Dime Detective from 1944 to 1948, beginning with “The Day Nobody Died” (Dime Detective, Feb. 1944).
Mariano Mercado is a Bellem. He is a Mexican private eye who has an office in Mexico City but keeps getting involved in cases in border towns and in the desert on the Mexican side of the U.S.-Mexico border. Mercado is a hypochondriac, although it never interferes with his cases. He is a snappy dresser, is wily, and is an effective private detective.
