Jones, Shagbark. Shagbark Jones was created by Ellis Parker Butler (Reverend Bryson Brace, Jabez Bunker, Diogenes, Grayson Greene, Philo Gubb, Jane Sprood) and appeared in six stories in The Red Book Magazine in 1917, beginning with “The Mystery Man” (The Red Book Magazine, Apr. 1917).
Shagbark Jones is a Con Man. He is a smart ne’er-do-well swindler who travels up and down the Mississippi River, selling himself as an astrologer, phrenologist, and seller patent medicines. He often encounters murders at his stops, and solves them through intelligent detection. He is assisted by “Black Pete,” a racist stereotype.
