Holdfast, Bulldog. Bulldog Holdfast was created by Cecil Hayter (Sexton Blake, Derwent Duff, Lobangu) and appeared in thirty-three stories in The Boys’ Friend from 1922 to 1924, beginning with “The Mount Street Burglary” (The Boys’ Friend, Mar. 18, 1922).
Harry Holdfast is an Irish private detective, active in London, who gained the nickname “Bulldog” in the Royal Navy during the war because of his persistence. Holdfast is extremely strong, in his late twenties, wealthy, and thought to be either eccentric or insane (possibly dangerously so). He is assisted by his manservant, Dene, and on occasion by Don Darrel.
