Durkin, James. James Durkin was created by Arthur Stringer (Alan Holt, Witter Kerfoot, James Kestner, Balmy Rymal, Rebstock Woodruff) and appeared in The Wire Tappers (1906) and Phantom Wires (1907).

James Durkin is a brilliant young inventor and telephone line operator who is on the verge of creating a version of the fax machine–but he lacks the money, and is poor enough to take jobs of questionable legality. On one such, he is arrested, but a brutal, suave gang leader, MacNutt, arranges to have the charges against Durkin dropped so that Durkin can go to work for him. Adventure, danger, and crime follow, with Durkin putting his great knowledge of the physics and technology of the telephone to good use, before MacNutt is dealt with and Durkin and his wife Frances escape, much wealthier, from the U.S.
