Beeke, William. William Beeke was created by Edwy Searles Brooks (Sexton Blake, Norman Conquest, Ironsides Cromwell, Clive Derring, Carson Grey, Jimmy Harding, Dixon Hawke, Invisible Speedman, Frank Kingston, Marko the Miracle Man, Falcon Swift, Umlosi, Waldo the Wonder Man) and appeared in nine story serials and two novels from 1929 to 1939, beginning with “Terror by Night!” (Union Jack #1357, Oct. 19, 1929).
William Beeke is a Chief Inspector with the Criminal Investigation Department of Scotland Yard. He is middle-aged, lean, and melancholy, and is known as the “Grouser.” On occasion he assists Sexton Blake on cases. Beeke is assisted by Eustace Cavendish, who is unlike Beeke in nearly all ways: Cavendish is elegantly dressed, suave, and the heir to a dukedom.
