Pond, Mr. Mr. Pond was created by G.K. Chesterton (Father Brown, Club of Queer Trades, Horne Fisher, Gabriel Gale) and appeared in eight stories from 1935 to 1936, beginning with “The Three Horsemen of Apocalypse” (The Storyteller, July 1935); the stories were collected in The Paradoxes of Mr. Pond (1937).
Mr. Pond is a dapper, polite British government official. He is quiet and neat, but there are monsters in his mind which emerge in the form of monstrous remarks. He likes to tell riddling stories hinging on paradoxes. He acts in secret, for his job, to solve crimes and problems. He is knowledgeable about the world and gets involved in espionage case. His Watson and friend is Gahagan, a “ginger-haired giant” Irish dandy who Pond helps clear of murder.
