Gale, Gabriel. Gabriel Gale was created by G.K. Chesterton (Father Brown, Club of Queer Trades, Horne Fisher, Mr. Pond) and appeared in eight short stories in a variety of magazines from at least 1920 to 1929, beginning with “The Fantastic Friends” (Harper’s Bazaar, Nov. 1920); the stories were collected in The Poet and the Lunatics (1929).
Gabriel Gale is a painter and poet who is thought by the world to be mad, not least because some of his actions are almost beyond eccentric. But Gale is a sane man in a world of lunatics and evil elites, and he solves mysteries, from fraud to murder, using his own interest in men’s motives and moral clues to catch the evil parties.
