Palmu, Inspector. Inspector Palmu was created by the Finnish author Mika Waltari (Piukkanen & Kiho) and appeared three novels from 1940 to 1962, beginning with Komisario Palmun erehdys; Palmu appeared in four films between 1961 and 1969.

Inspector Frans J. Palmu is a policeman in Helsinki. He is old, gruff, and irritable, but is wise and clever as well. Palmu is well-educated and constantly smokes cigars, and is similar in several ways to Inspector Kairala. He is Watsoned by Virta, a policeman who, though not as bright as Palmu, ends up at a higher rank in the police force than Palmu.
