Jones, Paul. John Paul Jones (1747-1792) was an American ship’s captain who gained fame during the American Revolutionary War. In 1905 and 1906 a fictionalized version of Jones appeared in nineteen stories in Paul Jones Weekly, beginning with “Paul Jones’ Cruise for Glory; or, The Sign of the Coiled Rattlesnake” (Paul Jones Weekly #1, Sept. 30, 1905).

Written by “Captain Luther Barr,” a pseudonym of John DeMorgan (Thaddeus Fergus), the stories portray the fictional Jones as a morally spotless and perfectly gallant naval officer in action both against the British during the Revolutionary War and at home on Jones’ Virginia plantation.
