Fergus, Thaddeus. Thaddeus Fergus was created by “An Old Salt,” a pseudonym used by John DeMorgan (Paul Jones), and appeared in thirty-seven stories in Red Raven Library in 1905, beginning with “Captain Kidd’s Sea Swoop; or, Carried Off by Pirates” (Red Raven Library #1, Jan. 17, 1905).
Thaddeus Fergus is a brave young man in New York City in the 17th century who vows to capture the pirate Captain Kidd. Fergus goes to sea with his best friends, Oliver Wade and “Simple Simon” Van Twiller, to do just that. They end up serving on the Red Raven, Kidd’s ship, and trying to figure out a way to capture Kidd. Their schemes are usually foiled by Kidd’s lieutenant, the fearsome Dragon. After Kidd is killed in issue #25, Fergus and friends work against the pirate Sir Henry Morgan.
