Gault, Captain. Captain Gault was created by William Hope Hodgson (Thomas Carnacki, Captain Jat) and appeared in ten stories in 1914 and 1915, beginning with “Contraband of War” (The London Magazine, July 1914); the stories were collected in Captain Gault (1917).
Captain Gault is the captain of a variety of passenger’s ships in both the Atlantic and the Pacific in the years before World War One. In that capacity he finds a number of interesting situations, from German spies to women who want to smuggle valuables into the U.S. without paying exorbitant customs taxes to Chinese who want to send mummies to London to crewmen who want to smuggle saccharine into London without paying custom taxes. Gault cleverly deals with them all, usually enriching himself in the process.
