Dax, Saturnin. Saturnin Dax was created by “Marten Cumberland,” the pseudonym of Kevin O’Hara (Loreto Santos), and appeared in thirty-four novels from 1940 to 1966, beginning with Someone Must Die.
Saturnin Dax is a portly member of the First Mobile Brigade of the Judicial French Police. As time passes he moves from poverty to wealth, ultimately rising to the rank of Special Commissaire. Dax is a clever policeman who is challenged but never beaten by the unusual crimes and criminals he faces. He is a gourmet and a gourmand, and is unusually sensitive to cold. “He wore a bowler hat and carried gloves and a fat yellow cane. His immense frame did not suggest fat, but rather the physical fitness of a man naturally very powerful. In his mahogany face were dark intelligent eyes….” He is assisted by Brigadier Felix Norman.
