Dana Girls. The Dana Girls were created by “Carolyn Keene,” the pseudonym of Leslie McFarlane (Michael Brent, Dave Dashaway, Hardy Boys, Perry Pierce), and appeared in the thirty book “Dana Girls” series, beginning with By the Light of the Study Lamp (1934) and concluding with The Phantom Surfer (1968).
Louise and Jean Dana live in Oak Falls, a suburban town somewhere in the Midwest, and attend Starhurst School for Girls, a very exclusive boarding school in the nearby village of Penfield. Louise is seventeen and dark, and Jean is sixteen and blonde. Both are pretty, smart, and capable. They are orphans who live with their Uncle Ned, a sea captain who is forced by his job to be away from home for most of the time, and Aunt Harriet, Ned's sister and an attractive but unmarried woman. They enjoy adventures and have a knack for solving mysteries, which is an aptitude they are often called upon to exercise.
