Challenger, Professor. Professor Challenger was created by Arthur Conan Doyle (Brigadier Gerard, Sherlock Holmes) and appeared in three novels and two short stories from 1912 to 1929, beginning with “The Lost World” (The Strand Magazine, Apr. 1912).
Professor Challenger is a short, conceited, pugnacious genius, scientist, adventurer and explorer. He is abrasive but usually correct, and whether adventuring in the Roraima plateau, and discovering dinosaurs there or preparing for a wave of “poisonous ether” to sweep across the Earth, it’s best to listen to Challenger and do as he says.
