Shankar. Shankar was created by the Indian author Bibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyaya and appeared in the serial “Chandar ka Pahar” (Mouchak, 1937; as a novel, 1937).
Shankar is an Indian boy who refuses to be tied down to a dreary life in rural Bengal and runs away to Africa. He takes a railway surveyor’s job, but then decides to find the Mountains of the Moon and its diamond mines, and he goes in search of them, accompanied by a strange man named Diego Alvarez, who claims to be Shankar’s father. The pair brave various deadly animals, including lions, black mambas, and the ferocious Bunyip.
