Rivers, Julian. Julian Rivers was created by “Carol Carnac,” the pseudonym of Edith Caroline Rivett-Carnac (Inspector Macdonald, Inspector Ryvet), and appeared in fifteen novels from 1945 to 1958, beginning with A Double for Detection.
Julian Rivers is a Chief Inspector for Scotland Yard. He is 48 years old in his debut, and is a Navy veteran from World War One, in which he won the D.S.O. at Jutland. He is known to his colleagues as “a reticent fellow who was a notably good boxer...and as one who had an exceedingly retentive memory.” He is “the type to whom appeals for assistance were made because he looked so eminently reliable, while his name was becoming a synonym for trouble among the criminal classes.”
