Old Broadbrim. Old Broadbrim was created by Jack Howard and appeared in sixty stories in Old Cap Collier Library and Old Broadbrim Weekly from 1884 to 1903, beginning with “Old Broadbrim, the Quaker Detective; or, the Strangest Trail of Crime on Record” (Old Cap. Collier Library #92, May 2, 1884).
Josiah Broadbrim is a Quaker detective, called "Old Broadbrim" because of his age and his broad brimmed hat (Quakers were called "broadbrim" because of their headgear). In proper Quaker fashion he is a pacifist (only reluctantly using his fists) and given to wearing grey clothing. Broadbrim is generally soft-spoken, using the Quaker "thee" when talking to other people. He is also a master of disguise. In Old Broadbrim Weekly he takes on a partner, Harry Wilson, a teenager of fifteen or sixteen who saves Josiah's life. Wilson becomes "Young Broadbrim," and solves cases with his friend "Dandy Dick" Burton. Young Broadbrim is somewhat wilder than Old Broadbrim, being just as alert, modest, and methodical but more full of vim and vigor.
Old Broadbrim teams up with Nick Carter (I) in the pages of Old Broadbrim Weekly.
