Mitchell, Bill. Bill Mitchell was created by Harold Lawlor and appeared in “Daughters of Darkness” (Fantastic Adventures, Apr. 1943) and “The Irresistible Perfume” (Fantastic Adventures, May 1943).
Bill Mitchell is an investigative reporter who is sent by his editor to investigate the disappearances of six handsome young men from a particular hotel, the Inn of the Laughing Cat. Mitchell and his friend Ronnie Erskine discover that, in the words of Satan Himself, “Hell contains only old men…this state of affairs is not at all to the liking of our women inhabitants. For some years they’ve been ding-donging at me about it till I thought I’d go mad.” To satisfy the women of Hell Satan began transporting handsome young men to Hell—thus the disappearances from the Inn of the Laughing Cat. Mitchell and Erskine are among those transported. They end up kissing many women and causing trouble in Hell for Satan before being returned to Earth. In the sequel Mitchell and his wife Maribel Lee, a former stripper who Mitchell took from Hell, are confronted with Satan again, who wants help with the temptation of a professor of chemistry, William Makepeace Potts. They don’t succeed in making him succumb to temptation, but Satan is a good sport and doesn’t mind his failure.
