Kardany. Kardany was created by the German author Karl August von Laffert and appeared in Fanale am Himmel (1925).

Kardany is a wealthy Polish perfume-maker who invents a gas so powerful that no mask can stop it. Kardany is a pacifist and intends to give the secret to every world government, as a way to achieve world peace, but the Soviets find out about it and pay a spy to steal the formula to the gas. However, the spy, who believed that the Soviets would use the gas for only defensive purposes, is appalled to discover that the Soviets intend to use the gas as an offensive weapon. The spy blows up the factory in which the gas is used and releases the stores of gas in Moscow, which forces the Kremlin to renounce their plans and ask for a world conference for peace.
