Gregory, Miss. Miss Gregory was created by Perceval Gibbon (Vrouw Grobelaar) and appeared in twelve stories in McClure’s from 1910 to 1912, beginning with “The Adventure on a Portuguese Trader” (McClure’s, Sept 1910); the stories were collected in The Adventures of Miss Gregory (1912).

Miss Gregory is a independent, unmarried English woman of a certain age who travels around the world and writes books (such as The Saharan Solitudes) based on her experiences. She is a born traveler who has friends around the world, “from Shanghai to Sierra Leone.” And thanks to her arrogance, she also has enemies around the world. She is short, handsome, and has a “mannish charm,” a strong personality, and a shrewdness which helps her through the adventure and peril she finds, on ships and shore around the world, from white thieves to native slave traders.
