Ernie. Ernie was created by Fredric Brown (Mitkey, Henry Smith (II)) and appeared in eighteen stories in Feedstuffs in 1937 and 1938 beginning with “The Case of the Flying Cow” (Feedstuffs, Mar. 20, 1937).
Ernie is an assistant to Mr. Barnabas Weap, of the firm of Feedum & Weap, feed dealers, and in that role has to deal with various minor mysteries—why a sheep farmer seems to have a different number of sheep every time he counts them, why a dozen hens lay a very large number of eggs several days in a row, and so on. Ernie is clever and always gets to the bottom of the mysteries.
