Moon Man. The Moon Man was created by Frederick C. Davis (Donald O’Keefe Adams, Bill Brent, Duke Buckland, Carter Cole, Dennis Dayle, Murray Gifford, Cyrus Hatch, Mark Hazzard, Jingling Kid, Guy Kerry, Paul Kirk, Show-Me McGee, Operator #5, Radigan, Ravenwood, Secrets, Inc., Peter Trapp II, Peter Van Dyk) and appeared in thirty-eight stories in Ten Detective Aces from 1933 to 1937, beginning with “The Sinister Sphere” (Ten Detective Aces, May/June 1933).
The Moon Man is a Costumed Avenger. The Moon Man is Stephen Thatcher, the son of the city police chief, Peter Thatcher. Stephen is a 25-year-old police sergeant who has what seems to be a normal life, including a fiancée (the gutsy Sue McEwen, daughter of a top cop and an amateur sleuth who often gets involved in the Moon Man’s cases) and friends. But at night Thatcher puts on a domed helmet (with one-way “Argus” glass) and a long black cloak and robs criminals and distributes the money to the poor. Thatcher is assisted by Ned Dargan, who is the man who actually gives the money to the poor and thus becomes known as the “Angel.” As the series progressed the Moon Man fights increasingly bizarre enemies, such as Primus, an international crime lord (he leads the Red Six) who wears a red mask with the Roman numeral one on its forehead and uses a form of mind control on his enemies and a particularly deadly kind of tetanus on his victims.
