Maryutka fires at the officer, who would be her forty-first victim, but misses. The Red Army soldiers capture the caravan and take the White Army lieutenant captive. Maryutka and the lieutenant are separated from the rest of the company, and they fall in love, but they are eventually discovered and Maryutka shoots the lieutenant to prove her patriotism.
