Martindel, Duke. Duke Martindel was created by Leslie Turner White (Captain Barnaby, Todd Naughton) and appeared in six stories in Dime Detective Magazine from 1934 to 1937, beginning with “Chosen to Die” (Dime Detective, Dec. 1, 1934).

Duke Martindel is a well-to-do private detective whose most notable aspect is his appearance: he has salt-and-peppered gray hair, a weathered and “deep-tanned square-chiseled” face, and outfits like a “double breasted suit of gay Glenurquhart plaid” worn beneath an English trench coat. He works to solve crimes with his wife Phyllis, a criminal lawyer, and his friend Captain Newton of the police.
