Joshua. Joshua was created by Moses Schere and appeared in three stories in Astounding Science-Fiction in 1938, beginning with “Anachronistic Optics” (Astounding Science-Fiction, Feb. 1938).

Joshua is the village handyman for Dr. Meadow. Dr. Meadow is a generalist with an interest in outré subjects and is given to unearthing crashed spaceships and excavating alien bones–that sort of thing. Dr. Meadow invents a time machine, but its use leads to problems in the village, and Joshua is forced to intervene and straighten out both the problems and Dr. Meadow.
