Howden, John. John Howden was created by Woosnam Mills and appeared in five novels from 1941 to 1953, beginning with Shadow Crusade.
John Howden is a Disabled Detective. Howden is an English nobleman. As a boy during World War One he was wounded by a shellburst and lost his sight. He recovered from his other wounds and became a clever and independent Secret Service agent and amateur detective. He is assisted by his spirited younger French wife Michèle, by his servant and friend Bat “who had watched over the boy blinded by a shellburst and had helped to turn him into the self-reliant man who stood now smoking his pipe,” and by Peter Burns and the other “Shadow Army” agents who Howden sends out into the field to fight Germans, Communists, and more prosaic evildoers.
