Hawkwood, Sir John. Sir John Hawkwood (c. 1320-1394) was an English condottiere active in 14th-century Italy. From 1911 to 1913 Marion Polk Angellotti wrote a series of nine stories and serials about him in Adventure, beginning with “Sir John Hawkwood” (Adventure, Apr. 1911). The fictionalized Hawkwood is a more romanticized version of the historical personage.
