Gidleigh, Inspector. Inspector Gidleigh was created by Seldon Truss (Inspector Bass, Detective Inspector Shane) and appeared in twenty novels from 1936 to 1965, beginning with Draw the Blinds.

Chief Inspector Gidleigh works at Scotland Yard on a variety of cases, from ordinary assaults on postmen to criminal masterminds and spies. He is a “massively built person with a lugubrious expression and drooping moustache.” Gidleigh is dutiful and an efficient investigator, but he takes a kind of morbid pleasure in hearing bad news and discovering unpleasantnesses.
