Gallagher, Grizzly. Grizzly Gallagher was created by Reginald C. Barker (Jim Hazel, “Cinnamon” Smith) and appeared in twenty stories in Western Story Magazine and a novel from 1924 to 1927, beginning with “Grizzly Gallagher” (Western Story Magazine, July 5, 1924).
Grizzly Gallagher is a frontiersman in Idaho in the 19th century, helping his neighbors and fighting the natives and the elements. He is an “old trapper with the otter-skin cap and silver-tipped hair and bushy beard,” and lives alone “in a cabin he had built at the head of Cashaway Creek.” He’s given to exclamations like “I swan.”
