Dyke, Toby. Toby Dyke was created by E.X. Ferrars and appeared in four novels from 1941 to 1943, beginning with Rehearsals for Murder.
Toby Dyke is an amateur detective in London’s West End. He’s smart, and he has a valet, but he also bears the hostility of Scotland Yard–he plays at being a reporter–and solves cases in spite of them, rather than with their help. Dyke is tall, dark, and sallow, and while one of the lazy rich has a gritty and almost hard-boiled attitude.
