Duff, John. John Duff was created by Harvey O’Higgins (Barney Cook) and appeared in nine stories in a variety of pulps from 1925 to 1929, beginning with “The Burton Murder” (The Red Book Magazine, Mar. 1925); the stories were collected in Detective Duff Unravels It (1929).

Detective John Duff is a N.Y.C. private detective who hires out to both individuals, for murder cases and the like, and to corporations, to investigate graft and such. Duff is good-natured and cheerfully cynical. He is large and strong, and is almost six feet and two hundred pounds of pure muscle.
