Dudley, Phyllis. Phyllis Dudley was created by R. Austin Freeman (Humphrey Challoner, Danby Croker, Romney Pringle, Doctor Thorndyke, Dr. Wilkinson) and appeared in seven stories which were collected in Flighty Phyllis (1928).

Phyllis Dudley is a plucky young American who goes to visit her cousin in London after visiting the Continent and, unfortunately, getting her hair cut almost entirely off. In London she discovers that a) her cousin has fled England due to a number of pressing debts and b) Phyllis, with her new, very short hair, can pass for her cousin if Phyllis wears his clothes. Phyllis likes being mistaken for a man, but London is a dangerous place for someone who owes money, and Phyllis has a variety of perilous adventures before finding true love.
