The Chief. The Chief was created by William J. Burns and appeared in “The Unthinking Miss Hughes” (Hearst’s Magazine, Dec. 1913) and “The Superb Cunning of Mr. Rink Murphy” (Hearst’s Magazine, Jan. 1914).

The Chief is a consulting detective who uses cunning, realistic methods–and the inspiration of detective stories, including and especially Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories–to outwit and capture criminals.
