Chandler, Cliff. Cliff Chandler was created by Baynard Kendrick (Duncan Maclain, Miles Standish Rice) and appeared in “Death at the Porthole” (Country Home Magazine, 1938) and “The Eye” (Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, Nov. 1945).
Cliff Chandler is the ship detective on the luxurious passenger liner S.S. Moriander, which makes a run from Southampton to New York. He used to be a private detective, active for six years in Europe, but then moved to a more comfortable job afloat. He catches cardsharps and murderers. He is tall, slim, and debonair, with a “quick grasp of languages…natural good breeding, and…hard common sense.”
