Blackie & Red. Blackie & Red were created by “Max Brand,” the pseudonym of Frederick Faust (Dan Barry, Border Bandit, Angus Campbell, Dave Clovelly, Jim Curry, Ronicky Doone, Firebrand (I), James Geraldi, Anthony Hamilton, Bull Hunter, Kid Montana, Doctor Kildare, King Charlie, Reata, Red Hawk, Silvertip (II), Thunder Moon), and appeared in four stories in Western Story Magazine in 1924 and 1925, beginning with “Blackie and Red” (Western Story Magazine, Sept 13, 1924).

“Blackie” is Lewis Jason Connell, an Easterner who went to Jackson Corners, in the American West, to earn money so he can pay back a racetrack tout he owes a lot of money to. Connell takes to the life, being tall, handsome, and muscular, and transforms himself from a greenhorn into a capable ranch hand. “Red” is Red Hardwick, a local and Blackie’s rival in many things, including the affections of a local heiress. But Red comes to Blackie’s aid when in need.
